Conservation & Breeding at Kanpur Zoo

Conservation breeding

Keeping the earlier Breeding programme in view and the species requirements, Kanpur Zoological Park has been selected as conservation breeding center for Swamp Deer. Barasinga or Swamp Deer is an endangered species and is endemic to the swampy areas of the terai tract of Uttar Pradesh.

As the Terai areas are cleared of agriculture much needed Swampy areas are diminishing and thus the animal population is reducing and restricted to a few pockets. Hence conservation breeding of this animal has been entrusted to Kanpur Zoological Park. At Present on an average 4 births are recorded per annum.

Kanpur Zoological Park is a participating Zoo for one Horned Rhinoceros. Rhino was reintroduced in Dudhwa National Park. The animals were brought from Chitwan National Park, Nepal and Kazairanga National Park, Assam. The animals were given complete protection. They are multiplying satisfactorily in the in-situ areas. To supplement their population ex-situ conservation measures are taken. Kanpur Zoological Park has been chosen as participating zoo. So far the breeding history of Kanpur Zoo is satisfactory.

Our Conservation Efforts

At Kanpur Zoo, we are dedicated to preserving biodiversity through a variety of conservation initiatives. Our efforts include habitat restoration, species reintroduction, and community education programs. We work closely with international conservation organizations to protect endangered species and their natural habitats.

Habitat Restoration

Our habitat restoration projects focus on rehabilitating areas that have been degraded by human activity. By restoring these environments, we provide a safe haven for wildlife to thrive and maintain ecological balance.

Species Reintroduction

Through our species reintroduction programs, we aim to reestablish populations of native species that have been driven to extinction in the wild. This involves careful planning and collaboration with wildlife experts to ensure successful integration.

Community Education

Educating the community is a vital part of our conservation strategy. We conduct workshops and outreach programs to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and how individuals can contribute to these efforts.

Breeding Programs

Kanpur Zoo’s breeding programs are essential for the survival of many endangered species. By maintaining genetically diverse populations, we help prevent extinction and support global conservation goals.

Significance of Breeding

Our breeding initiatives not only increase the population of threatened species but also enhance genetic diversity, which is crucial for the health and resilience of wildlife populations. These efforts are instrumental in ensuring the long-term survival of species at risk.
